Skills for Serving

Summer is finally here! School’s out, and now you can do all the fun activities summer has in store for you–family vacations, amusement parks, camp, etc. You have probably spent hours planning what you are going to do with all your free time. When planning your summer, did you plan time for God? Are you going to use your time for Him this summer? Even though you may not have a car or your driver’s license, or money, you can still make time for God’s work. As stated in last month’s issue, God has made you unique. Each one of you has your own special talents. Don’t let them waste away over the summer. Use this time to build on what God has given you, to grow in Christ, and to glorify Him. Let’s look at some of the things you can do to pierce your heart for Christ.

God made us in His own image (Genesis 1:26-27). Since God made us in His image, He did not make a mistake in creating us. Each and every one of us is special and unique. God has given us different personalities, looks, and skills. Some of us are more outgoing, while others like to work “behind the scenes” to get things done. Some are good teachers, while others are more creative do-ers. God made us different so we can better serve Him. If everyone was out knocking on doors to introduce people to Christ, who would be visiting the sick or making meals for the shut-ins? We each need to take a look at our self to determine our likes/dislikes, skills, and limitations. Jesus shows us the importance of this when he shares the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30. (In this parable, talents refer to money.) This parable is about a man who gave his servants talents (money). To one, he gave five; to another, he gave two; and to the third, he gave one. The two servants who received five and two talents each doubled what they received. However, the servant with the one talent buried his money so he would not lose it. He didn’t try to do anything with it. When the master came back, he was pleased with the first two servants because they put forth the effort to do something with what they were given. The man was very upset with the third servant. He was so angry that he took the talent from him and gave it to the first servant.

We each have something we like to do and/or are good at. What is it that you like to do? I’m sure there are some out there who think they don’t have anything to contribute. This is NOT TRUE! Remember, God made you in His image. He didn’t put you here to do nothing. It is time to take an inventory of yourself. List the things you like to do and the things you are good at. Do you like to talk on the phone? The next time you pick up the phone to call a friend, why not call someone who is sick or shut in. They would love to hear from someone, even if it is for only 5 or 10 minutes. Do you like to shop? Next time you go shopping, ask that girl that nobody talks to to go with you. You could make a huge difference in her life. Do you like to draw or make things? Sunday School teachers would love the extra help in preparing crafts for their classes. The sick would appreciate a card, as well. Do you like to go to the movies or the park? There are plenty of moms who could use a break. Why not ask them if you can take their child(ren) to the park or to a movie. Or better yet, stay with them at their home so the mom can run errands or just get away for a couple hours. These are just a few ideas. There are plenty more that you can do. You just need to think of what it is you can do and who you can help. It may be hard at first to make a phone call or ask if you can help someone. It is often equally hard for that other person to accept your help. So be patient with them. Keep trying. Let them know that by accepting your help, they are allowing you to serve. Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 25:34-36: “Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and you gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick and ye visited me: I was in prison and ye came unto me.”

God did not make a mistake in creating us. We have a purpose, and that purpose is to glorify Him in all that we do. Since God chose to create you in His image, shouldn’t you have faith in Him that you can make a difference?

Let us pray.
Dear God, my most gracious Heavenly Father. Thank you for making me who I am. Please help me to realize how precious I am to Your plan. Help me find my strengths so I can better serve You. Please give me the strength and courage to make time for You this summer, as well as all of my days. Thank you, dear Father, for loving me and trusting me to do the best I can with what You have given me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Summer Glow

Looking Great Despite the Heat

It’s time for the pools to open, which can only mean one thing: summer! Summer means picnics, swimming, summer camp, and bonfires. It also means it’s time to hit the drugstore and find your perfect summer shades. Summer make-up is meant to be fun and easy. Why spend hours inside getting ready when you could be having fun in the sun?

Sunscreen is the most important thing you can do for your skin. The more you use sunscreen now, the better you will look ten or twenty years from now. Do you want to be one of those girls in their thirties who people look at and think, “She looks so young! Her skin is so smooth—there is no way she’s thirty-five!” or do you want them to think, “Wow, she spent way too much time in the tanning booth. Do you see those wrinkles?”

The next thing to consider is your foundation. If you choose to wear foundation, keep in mind the shade you have at the beginning of summer may not work in six weeks if you plan on spending time in the sun. Look for something light, like a powder that isn’t oil-based, so it won’t separate. If you cake your face with too much foundation you may find it streaks off when you sweat, which is a look no one wants. However, I suggest skipping the foundation altogether. Instead, go for a tinted moisturizer. It gives your face a little color, and evens out your skin tone while serving as a moisturizer, and you can’t beat how light it feels in the summer heat. Of course, find one that includes an SPF of at least 15 (SPF 30 is better). I also suggest skipping the blush. Let the outdoors provide you with a nice healthy glow or use a bronzing powder to give you a sun-kissed look.

Summer is a very critical time to treat your skin nicely. Wash your face every morning and night and also if you’ve been outside sweating. It’s also important to use a moisturizer, since the sun can dry out your skin. Try to find one that isn’t too heavy, like Dove moisturizer with SPF 15. Heavier crèmes are okay for nighttime, but be careful if you have oily skin, because it can clog your pores.

Summer = shimmer: use it in your eye shadow or your blush—the summer sun will really set it off. Light tones of pink are best for fair skin, and bronzed tones are better for tan or dark tones. But don’t stick to pink the whole time; summer is all about fun, so try bright colors like turquoise or purple. For daytime keep it light; in the evenings you can go with a little more color. Just don’t wear shimmer in all your make-up, or you’ll look like you were attacked by glitter.

Skip the lipstick. Lip gloss in all shades can be fun for summer—but be careful where you leave your tube. The hot summer sun plus lip gloss in your car equals a mess. Chap stick will melt, too, so make sure you take it inside.

When outside, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun. To avoid white raccoon eyes, though, apply sunscreen every two hours to your face and entire body. Make sure to keep lots of water around, and have fun in the sun!

Fire Up the Grill!

This month we’re talking grilling, and I mean the real deal. Here are some tips that will help you throw the best backyard barbecue bash of the season.

Tips For Grilling Chicken:
1. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS marinate!!
* When marinating, pick your favorite marinade. Classic favorites are barbecue and Italian (dressing).
* Marinate for at least 30-45 minutes; this will make your chicken very tender.
2. DON’T FORGET YOUR TIMING!!
* Be sure when grilling to keep the grilling time equal on each side of the meat.

Tips For Grilling Steak:
1. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS marinate!!
* When marinating steak, you’ll have to leave the marinade on longer than you would for chicken.
* Marinate for at least 1-2 hours.

MIX IT UP!!
* Try something new when grilling, like making shrimp and pineapple skewers or steak and pepper kabobs.
* Baste your chicken with a honey ginger sauce before grilling; serve over rice for an Asian dish that’s a crowd pleaser.

Now it’s time to put these tips to good use–invite the new people at church to your barbecue, or take some to a shut-in or someone who’s sick. There are so many ways to share your freedom in Christ, and what better way to spread the word than through food and fellowship? Remember Matthew 25:25, 40 “[Jesus said] ‘For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in . . . inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’”

Wake up America

This month we have chosen to post something from a gifted guy instead of a gifted girl. This gifted guy is a very special uncle of both editors, and he has a firm grasp on the true freedom that Christ offers, no matter what the circumstances.

Wake Up America

Oh, God, wake up America, the land of the free
And help her to remember that her strength lies in thee.
If her people Your guidance in all things they do seek
Then as a nation “under God” they will never be found weak.

Strong as a people, united they will stand
If Your laws are upheld all over this great land.
Yes, “Righteousness exalts a nation” the Holy Book does say,
But “Sin is a disgrace,” so for righteousness let us pray.

May we never forget who it was that made us great
And turn our hearts back to God before it is too late.
The most powerful nation on earth may someday cease to be
If its people turn their backs on the strength that made them free.

May we truly uphold our motto, “In God Do We Trust,”
And do away with greed and selfishness, our idols, and our lust.
As you wave that flag of freedom held high so all can see
Live so that God does bless America, and keeps this land forever free.

God’s flower arrangements

Matt. 6:28-30 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith.”

Freedom of Expression

As U.S. citizens, we are given the freedom to express ourselves in many ways that people in other countries are not. Two of those ways are through our dress and speech.

First Timothy 2:9 says, “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety…” Most people would not argue that a Christian should be modestly dressed. But, what is modest? That is where there is a difference of opinion.

Freedom in Dress

I will be the first to admit that it is hard to find well-fitting clothes–I am tall and very curvy. Especially clothes that make me feel pretty and comfortable, and still are modest at the same time.

As Christians, we know that everything we do or don’t do is watched by others.  Anywhere we go, one of the first things that people notice about others is what they are wearing. While I do not believe in judging a book by its cover, I do believe, as Christians, we need to at least have a cover on! We all have our own standards on what is modest and what is not. I cannot sit and tell you what you can and can’t wear, but I can help you make your decisions based on God’s Word.

As young women, we deal with our bodies changing almost every day. We begin to have curves that we didn’t have before, and suddenly we begin to be recognized by boys. I am not going to say that the recognition is based solely on looks, but you have to ask yourself when you put on your clothes if it is going to give someone the wrong impression of you.

If a boy can see a lot of your skin, will he then want to touch your skin? Will that make him want something more? I am in no way saying that you have to be covered from head to toe, but I am saying that maybe we need to think a little more about what is covered and what is not before we go out with our friends, or even to worship service. We need to train our hearts to want what is right to God, rather than what we think should be right.

Freedom in Speech

Another way we express ourselves is through speech. I know that slang changes with every generation, so even though I am not that old, I know the slang from my day is out. But, it seems as though more and more internet slang is being used in everyday life. We have to be careful not to get pulled into this. Just because you are using acronyms instead of the word doesn’t make it acceptable by any means. And I am not only talking about curse words. The hate that can be displayed through acronyms is astonishing to me. It is almost as if there is a completely different language online used to hurt people and gossip, to abuse and defame.

James 3:5-6 tells us, “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.”

What we say affects all of God’s church. If someone knows you are a member of the Church but hears you saying something horrible about someone or using language that is questionable, he or she will think that the Church is full of hypocrites. It is the same thing with online acronyms. Just because it is a letter of the alphabet and not the actual word does not mean that it is not effective. To the person who reads it, it still means the same thing.

Using inappropriate language is, unfortunately, becoming more and more acceptable in our world. Like any habit, cursing is one that is hard to change. If you already use that kind of language, perhaps to help yourself to stop, you should fill your vocabulary with other words. Find a word in the dictionary and try to learn a new word each day (of course, it has to be one that is appropriate). Force yourself to find words to express your feelings without using vulgar language.

Whether you decide to pull out your dictionary or not, it is always best to think before you speak. I know we have all heard that many times, but it is definitely one of the easiest ways to keep yourself from saying something you do not really mean. Perhaps if we all thought a little more about what we were saying, and doing, we would not make many of the mistakes that we do.

So, as we celebrate freedom as a nation, let’s remember that as a Christian, we must always express ourselves in a way that shows others who truly sets us free, Jesus.

Freedom of Media

BOOM!!

Fireworks. . . automatically, without thinking, most of our minds tune into radiant light shows occurring on a special day for our country: the Fourth of July.

When our forefathers were embracing the ink-tipped feathers to create our nation, I know that one thing was on their mind. Freedom was the reason why we, as immigrants, united along-side one another to create this nation. However, this “freedom” has transformed from its preexisting form to an immoral, irrational monster that grows at a faster pace from the day before. A major cause of this is media.

I do not mean that all media is bad (it is helpful in many instances). But it has given our nation answers (both right and wrong) to questions dealing with moral issues. Most of us can think of examples of this (homosexual relationships, unmarried couples living together, unplanned pregnancies, etc.). The media tell us that people are entitled to freedom and, therefore, it is morally acceptable to participate in acts that in the past were thought of as immoral.

Freedom has allowed our country to become what it is today. Many developments over the years have encouraged us spiritually by allowing us more opportunities (for example: school prayer meetings, revival/gospel meeting advertisements, religious stations, etc.). Today, in many areas, the world is becoming more open to immoral activities; however, it is also giving us the freedom to stand against and conquer the devil’s temptations.

Many opportunities are open to us as Christians through the media itself. We tend to not take advantage of the artistic ways of spreading God’s word, such as through television shows, newspapers, books, posters, and even online magazines. Hopefully, though, with the ever growing popularity of media in our daily lives, we can help the world grow not only in the advancements of technology, but spiritually as well.

Freedom Book of the Month

A Farewell to Arms
Ernest Hemingway

Many books have been written describing the effects of war on the average person in order to attempt to explain how much freedom means to the human-being; however, most of these books bore the average teenage girl. We tend to be more interested in social issues than political motifs. To solve this problem of boredom, while reading a classic war story, Ernest Hemingway wrote a book called A Farewell to Arms.

Although I am quite certain he didn’t intend the book to be directed toward the teenage-girl audience, he did an excellent job of relating it to social issues while including a war background.

Set during World War I, this novel tells the story of an American ambulance driver who is injured during the war and is placed in a foreign hospital. Combining graphic war images with love and death, Hemingway captures the picture of war surrounded by seemingly real characters. Be prepared to fight back the tears as you embrace the price of freedom in its original form.
